LEFKOSA - Dervis Eroglu, the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said on Thursday that if no result was taken from the efforts to form a government, early elections were inevitable.
Speaking after the TRNC cabinet meeting headed by TRNC President Rauf Denktas, Eroglu said that they held the last meeting of the year.
Eroglu said that they were trying to form a government, adding that if no government was founded, early elections would come to agenda. After the oath-taking ceremony, President Denktas would designate somebody to form the government in the coming period, he said. Eroglu stated that there were studies about Cyprus issue in Ankara, adding that ``we have not yet seen the results of those studies. They will certainly be assessed. If government is formed, the government will continue its mission, if not then early elections will come to agenda.``
When reminded about the statement of Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul who said that they preferred formation of a broad-based government rather than early elections, Eroglu said that ``we search for formation of a government in Cyprus. But if that government can`t be set up, one of the alternatives is early elections. If we are obliged to apply to elections, certainly early elections are inevitable.``
Upon a question, Eroglu said that a designation was not made about formation of a government, and the contacts made between parties had the character of preliminary contacts. Eroglu stated that more detailed meetings were necessary after the task of forming the government was given to one person and the possibility of reaching a compromise or not would come out.
